Working to reduce wave-induced erosion along Tofu Cape Bay; secure the continued, safe operations of the signal station, parking lot, and other facilities that front this bay; and ensure coastal water safety, NT$18 million has been allocated from the Commercial Port Development Fund to execute the Suao Port Tofu Bay Submerged Breakwater and Related Facilities Project. Work is scheduled for completion in October 2017.

As the parking lot, signal station and other facilities in the Tofu Bay Recreation Area face directly out into the ocean through the mouth of the bay, they received the brunt of two typhoons in 2015 (Soudelor and Dujuan), which damaged the existing north-south (submerged) breakwater, hollowed out the foundation beneath the signal station, and damaged parking lot protective railings and surfaces. The damaged protective structures and shoreline facilities led to the development of the Suao Port Tofu Bay Submerged Breakwater and Related Facilities Project. In addition to repairing and reconstructing the north-south submerged breakwater, the project will install an additional 500, 10-ton wavebreak tetrapods outside of the bay’s coral habitat in order to provide additional protection to shoreline facilities and to improve the overall environment in and around the bay. Project work is also expected to enhance the protection of coral ecologies in the bay and provide a safe and comfortable environment for visitors.

This project, begun on April 20th, 2017, is required to be completed within 180 calendar days. Ninety-five percent of project work is currently complete. Typhoon Nesat, which passed through the area during the project period, caused no damage or loss, demonstrating the expected long-term benefits of project work. The smooth execution of project work supports expectations that work will be completed by mid-October, just in time for the October 2017 National Games’ sailboat competition.
